Google Chrome Operating System

Google segera merilis sistem operasi baru yang diberi nama Google Chrome Operating System. Sesuai namanya, sistem operasi tersebut merupakan pengembangan lanjut proyek web browser Chrome yang sudah dirilis Google sejak sembilan bulan lalu. Sistem operasi baru ini dibuat untuk memuaskan para pengguna yang tak bisa lepas dari internet dan dibangun dari platform web browser. Pengguna seperti ini umumnya membutuhkan akses ke browser web dan layanan online secepat mungkin tanpa booting lama untuk menyalakan komputer yang memang sistem operasinya saat ini tidak dibuat khusus untuk akses ke internet. Google Chrome OS akan menjawab tantangan tersebut.

Sistem operasi berbasis open source ini didesain untuk menyediakan layanan online secepat mungkin, semudah mungkin, dan aman. Chrome OS akan mendukung spesifikasi hardware yang ringan seperti netbook meski ke depan tetap mendukung desktop standar. Dari sisi kecepatan, perangkat lunak ini membutuhkan spesifikasi perangkat keras rendah dan dapat melakukan booting dengan cepat.

Platform ini akan dikembangkan secara open source dan akan diberikan kepada komunitas secara cuma-cuma. Diharapkan penggunaannya akan menekan harga dan menjangkau pengguna lebih banyak lagi.

Google Chrome OS pada tahap awal didesain untuk bekerja pada netbook. Akhir tahun ini, Google akan merilisnya ke komunitas open source dan pada tengah tahun 2010 akan tersedia netbook dengan sistem operasi tersebut. Google mengaku telah menjalin hubungan dengan sejumlah vendor komputer.
